In the 20s of the 20th century this place was a major attraction - the Lichtenberg river bath with approx. 17.000 visitors daily, unused in the 50s, East German customs administration since 1969, unused since 1989: "nature took over". The site is + remains completely unchanged, the existing buildings were respected, renovated + transformed by additional floors to a place of inspiration with a wide view over the river Spree + the city. Landscape as a connecting element remains important for the future character of the property. “Kantine” + “Platte” were built from floor-to-ceiling, plastic concrete elements. Parapets + lintels are now removed, the color is replaced by a colorless coat of paint, a new façade level behind the surface strengthens their plasticity + offers space for sun protection. The floor plans are tidy, the structure is free, the surfaces “rough”, installations bundled, electrics visible. Additional floors were introduced: "canteen" with 3, "plate" with 2 floors, using existing load reserves, in steel, the outer wall made of industrially standardized aerated concrete slabs in different formats + free laying with strong plasticity, analogue to the existing building - a particularly inexpensive construction. The mansard shape of the “slab” is reminiscent of boats upstairs. The covering of flat bricks visually combines with the cleaned facade surface.
